In an interview with David Letterman, which will release on Friday, Ellen Degeneres opens up about sexual assault that she was subjected to as a teen by her step father.
During the show which is titled ‘My Guest Needs No Introduction,” Ellen recalls the moment the abuse started.
Ellen said, the abuse started after my mother, whose name is Betty, was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“He told me when [my mom] was out of town that he’d felt a lump in her breast and needed to feel my breasts,” she recalled in her conversation with Letterman. “Anyway, he convinced me that he needs to feel my breasts and then he tries to do it again another time, and then another time.”
She also recalled the time when she was in her room and he tried to break her door down to get to her, but before he could she escaped through her bedroom window.
She continued “I’m angry at myself because, you know, I didn’t, I was too weak to stand up to, I was 15 or 16,” DeGeneres said. “It’s a really horrible, horrible story and the only reason I’m actually going to go into detail about it is because I want other girls to not ever let someone do that.”
Ellen stated at the time she did not tell her mother because she did not want to upset her.
When she finally decided to tell her mother Ellen said she didn’t believe her. She added I should have never protected my mother I should have protected myself because she still decided to stay with him for 18 more years. She then finally decided to leave him because he’d changed his story so many time.
Ellen said she has decided to tell her story in hopes to protect other survivors from suffering in silence.
When I see other victims speak out now and they aren’t believed it makes me angry because you know we don’t just make stuff up.
The Show airs Friday on Netflix.
