On Monday George Floyd’s family and attorney Benjamin Crump revealed the results of the independent autopsy they had performed to determine the cause of George’s death after the first autopsy tried to blame his death on underlying health issues.
Well known forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden who performed the autopsy rebutted the first autopsy performed by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner by concluding that George Floyd did not have any underlying health issues.
According to Attorney Crump it is determined that his cause of death is homicide by asphyxia due to back and neck compression that led to a lack of blood flow to the brain.
He continued by stating the sustained pressure that Mr. Floyd received on the right side of his carotid artery impeded blood flow to his brain and the weight on his back restricted his ability to breathe. The examiners found that the weight on the back, the handcuffs, and the positioning were factors that contributed to his death because it impaired the ability of Mr. Floyd’s diaphragm to function.
In the chilling video Floyd can be heard on several occasions pleading to the officers for his life by stating, “I Can’t Breathe!”
Dr. Baden attacked the notion that officers believe just because one is able to speak also means they are able to breathe by stating, “That’s not true.”
Derek Chauvin the ex-officer who is seen with his knee implanted in George’s neck did so for almost nine minutes while three minutes of that time he was unresponsive.
“For Chauvin to leave his knee on George’s neck despite warnings and evidence that his life was in danger and to continue that course for many minutes, demands a first-degree murder charge,” stated attorney Crump.
To date Chauvin has been fired and arrested on charges of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. He is currently being held at Oak Park Heights, a maximum security prison, in Minnesota. The other three officers who were involved have also been fired but have not yet been charged in connection with George Floyd’s death.
