Grand Rapids, Michigan– The Michigan law enforcement officer that killed Patrick Lyoya with a shot to the head has been with the Grand Rapids department for seven years.
Christopher Schurr’s name circulated because his face appears in video clips of the April 4 confrontation with Lyoya, a Black male. However, Schurr’s identification had not been publicly acknowledged until Monday, when the police chief changed course and released it, three days after the funeral of the 26-year-old native of Congo.
Chief Eric Winstrom said he acted for openness, lower continuous supposition, and to stay clear of any more complications.
Schurr got on top of Lyoya, who was unarmed, and was face down on the ground when he was shot point-blank in the back of his head, just minutes after a traffic stop in the second largest city of Michigan.
The forensic pathologist, who also performed former President John F. Kennedy’s autopsy, conducted an autopsy at the family’s request and confirmed that the gun was pushed to Loya’s head when shot.
The family of Lyoya is demanding that Schurr is terminated and charged immediately for the death of their loved one.
